12 Days of HOPE 4 Youth: Day 7

On the seventh day of Christmas, Jess was able to get the medication he needed to manage his diabetes thanks to our onsite clinic, HOPE Clinic, and our partners. When Jesse first visited HOPE Clinic in August he was living with diabetes, but not managing it. He had not checked his blood sugar levels in many months and finally had it checked. The doctor wrote Jesse a prescription for a blood glucose meter and insulin. The prescription was sent to our partner Goodrich Pharmacy and when they ran it through Jesse’s insurance the total came to more than $800.

Our Director of Programs, Sara Kemp, called the pharmacy to see what the cost of just the blood glucose meter was, as there was no way Jesse could afford $800 for everything. The pharmacist responded with, “I’ll see what I can do.” She called back 15 minutes later to say that they were able to reduce it to $75 thanks to coupon discounts. She also said they were working on the prescription and would deliver it to the Drop-In Center before we closed. Jesse could not believe that he was able to get the equipment and medication he needed to manage his diabetes – and is now feeling so much better because of that.
