Alex’s Story
Alex first walked through our doors last September after he found himself with nowhere to sleep except the streets. He knew that he needed help to move past his current situation and hoped that we could work with him on a plan to do just that.
The first step was finding him an immediate place to stay so he was off the streets and could focus on the next steps in his journey. The second step was to help him find work so that he could save money for an apartment deposit and to purchase a vehicle. This was not an easy step for Alex as he lacked the confidence that he needed to find work. After attending a course on identifying your strengths, Alex realized that his strength was one he learned from his grandfather, auto mechanics. We watched Alex’s confidence return as he put together his resume and applied for jobs. Within two weeks he interviewed for two jobs and was hired at Valvoline.
Alex has already been promoted from the front desk to learning how to perform oil changes. He has received many compliments about his customer service skills and loves the work that he does. He’s also been saving money and has now achieved step three – finding an apartment through our Housing Navigation Program – and step four – purchasing a car. Our Housing Heroes also helped furnish his apartment with household necessities. Alex is happy with the steps he has taken on his journey so far. We are proud of the accomplishments he made in such a short time and will continue to help him on his path.
