Who I am “In Christ” – My New Identity

We will never live the life that God has planned for us until we learn who we are in Christ. We will only have as much victory in our lives as the knowledge we possess of who we truly are in Him. Too often we live our lives like we are no more than we were before Christ – we are saved and on our way to Heaven, but we have no victory in this life. We are not who we used to be, we are now “In Christ”. God wants us to overcome, conquer and reign in life (Romans 5:17) through Jesus.

I have put together some verses (below) that illustrate who we are and what we have been given “In Christ”. They describe our inheritance in Him. This, of course, is not an exhaustive list – there are many more wonderful promises which I will add. But I believe that this list is a very good starting point to begin to transform your mind, your thoughts, your believing and eventually your life.

Learning to be spiritually minded vs. carnally minded means growing in the Word of God. The Word is Spirit and life (John 6:63). It is the Word of God that divides between soul (the carnal part of us) and spirit (Hebrews 4:12). So in order to learn how to walk in the Spirit rather than the flesh (spiritual mindedness vs. carnal mindedness), we must transform our thinking from the natural human way we have been accustomed to thinking and reacting to things and begin to think like the Word (which is Spirit and life).

We must know the Word in order to learn this new way of thinking – according to James (chapter 1) God’s Word is the mirror that shows us how we are to think and live. James 1:25 tells us that if we continue in the Word (and not be a forgetful hearer only) that we will be blessed. But James 1:23-24 says that unless we continue in it, it’s like looking at our face in a mirror and then forgetting what we look like… and nothing changes.

So, in order to ‘continue’ in the Word, we must keep the scriptures before us (Prov. 4:20-22 instructs us to keep His Words before our eyes and in the midst of our hearts).

Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. How do we hear the Word of God?…when it is SPOKEN!  God’s spoken Word ignites our faith when we hear it enough.

The best way to continue in the Word and grow our faith is to SPEAK it out loud repeatedly…until it becomes a part of our natural thinking. This is how our minds are renewed from carnal (which produces death and despair) to spiritual (which produces life and peace).

The litmus test for life “in the flesh vs. in the spirit” is PEACE. If what you are thinking produces sadness, depression, depravity, a downtrodden spirit, feelings of inferiority, etc., then you are thinking and living “in the flesh”, but if you are thinking and living “in the Spirit” peace, hope and love (and the other fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23) will be your constant companions.

Let’s get started…begin to study the verses below and then speak out loud the confessions of faith regarding these truths (enclosed by parentheses and italicized underneath the scriptures). Please feel free to change and make the confessions your own…what I’ve written in italics is only a suggestion.

The pathway to victory is paved with persistence. Please try to develop the habit of speaking Bible promises each day, especially those related to the specific areas of weakness in your life.

God bless you in your victorious journey my friend!
